The Southeastern Horticultural Society

Posted by Stuart DiNenno on October 28, 2008 at 11:04 AM

For many years the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society was the premier horticultural group in the United States.  The Philadelphia Flower Show was a first class show run by the Pennsylvania Society, and was ranked as one of the top shows in the world.

But the climate and growing conditions in the South were rather different from the Northeast, and the need for a more relevant resource for Southern gardeners was finally realised when the Southeastern Horticultural Society was formed.  Modeled on the Pennsylvania group, the Southeastern Flower Show has become the main fundraiser for the new group.

There are many benefits of belonging to the organization but from a practical standpoint, the members early admission to the Flower Show and use of the Members Only lounge are perhaps some of the the most prized.  In 2009, The Southeastern Flower Show will be held at the Cobb Galleria in 2009 (Jan 28th - Feb 1st).

Besides the Flower Show perks, other benefits of SHS membership include lectures, newsletters and workshops to help gardeners in the Southeast.

The inaugural lecture for the Society will be held on November 13th, 10 am, when Tony Avant will be the guest speaker. The meeting will be held at McElreath Hall in the Atlanta History Center, West Paces Ferry Road NW.
